Specialists - Research and preparation

The renovation of a monument involves several phases. The designs are also created in different phases. At the same time, a team of specialists conducts research. The preparation for the build is then already in full swing. The designs are implemented in the execution phase. Because each building element has its own story, these phases will not be implemented simultaneously throughout the Binnenhof.

Doing research

Renovation starts with extensive research. This involves specialists from a range of fields. Like archaeologists and building historians who study the history of the building and the outdoor area. Structural specialists inspect the foundations and walls to make sure they are strong enough. Paint specialists study the paint layers. Specialist cable assemblers and electrical engineers check the routes of existing pipes and cables. The results of these studies are incorporated in the design.

Preparation

To implement a design, the Central Government Real Estate Agency makes all kinds of preparations. By starting with a baseline assessment, it is possible to establish the exact state of the building before the renovation. The contractors then set up the construction site. Carpenters provide everything of historic value with wooden protection. Vulnerable art and interior furnishings are sent to depots, so that the renovation does not cause any damage. The Central Government Real Estate Agency also ensures that equipment is installed to measure vibrations and construction and other noise.

The renovation really began in 2016, when the programme for the renovation was launched.
